Ditto to the above what Dan said. I'm running the same exact darkside setup. I recently had to get both new tires because I picked up 5 nails. However, without checking my stats, I got about 18,000 miles out of this darkside setup and I had not put a serious dent in the wear of the tires. I'm guessing another 5 or 10K would not have been impossible.

I use Dynabeads on front and rear to balance. Two ounces in each tire.

Riding on that wide rear tire is the only thing unique and different that I have noticed. If one part of the lane rides up or is not level, you can feel it on the rear. It's like pulling under my parent's carport and half the tire runs over the doormat, you feel the bike tilt.

It's not enough to make me want to stop using the tire, it's just something I notice. I'm not a peg scraper, but I have scraped the outer edge of my boot in some turns. No problem with the grip of the tires. I fully endorse the darkside.

Changing the tires, I have tire irons and can change the front. I have to take the rear tire to my local scooter dealer and he will install the new tire for 15 bucks. I usually cut the old tire off with my recipricating saw.

Uh........... I know a lotta folks are having good luck with these but uh.......

Ol StrayDog ain't too keen on this..........

Do you just - for the most part - go so slow that you do not lean?

Well thanks Stray. After seeing that video, I'm scared now. Yikes!

Actually, I only go slow with leaning for the first couple hundred miles while I wear off that slick coating from the manufacturers. After that, it is full lean, full tilt and it is at full safe speed. My first darkside tire took a little time to warm up to trusting it. But now, I completely trust the tire as I would a motorcycle tire. And I have been on the Dragon and scraped the outside of my boot in some of the turns. I'm not a hotdogger, but I appreciate the Dragon for what it is. Fun!!!!!

Now I'm going to have to find a way to film my tire while in motion. That was cool as crap.

Years ago I had a truck tire incident - short version:

Gonna take a trip - decided new tires were in order. Got Michelins - 5 miles down the road
one front tire bead blew out. They replaced it. Next morning same thing - different wheel.
No other problems (I wrote it up to their tire machine &/or the operator was damaging the tire bead upon installation).

Next set of tires - same Michelins - different tire store. Dude set first tire up against water cooler after new tire was installed and aired up. Next thing we know we hear what sounded like a 45 going off - that sucker exploded! Deystroyed the cooler. Had he have been placing the wheel on the truck I'm convinced it would have crushed his chest.

Never really could prove what caused all the madness...

Point of story - there is a ton of energy in an inflated tire. And everything is riding on it (no pun). Tires are so reliable that I think we tend to take for granted how serious they are.

And I'm being a hipocrite as I have run two rear tires down to the threads recently....

I ran the Metzler Marathon ME880 rear tire and had very good milage from it 14K with about 4k towing a trailer with lots of good tread left. I noticed some cracking between the tread blocks at about 8k and became concerned,as the side walls looked fine. I looked on line and found several comments on the PC board (yahoo) about the tread separating and chunks of tread coming off. Those I contacted said the tires were at least 5 years old and where a bit dry rotted, my tires were only 2 years old at 14K and then I found some references concerning tread chunks coming off on newer tires when the temps were below 30 deg F.

Now the thing is last nite I checked my tire pressures and inspected my tires for a ride today, tread was fine. The temps were cold 28 deg F. I rode 40 miles stopped for breakfast and just happened to glance at my rear tire and found 3 tread chunks had come off of the left side of the tire! I rode it back home, the temps had gone to 50deg. When I got home no more chunks had come off.

The tires were great until the things threw tread like that at 14K. I will get some pictures and post. I truly believe there must be a problem with these tires if they fail like that. I have seen on line many instances of this happening. I saw the picture of the tire on this thread where it was worn completely to the threads on the left side and I wondered if he rode much in very low temps?? I like the tire BUT??

Any comments? thanks

I just purchased two Dunlop 555K's for my 1995 PC from DennisKirk.com. They were 120/80H-17 front $100.98 and 140/80H-15 $106.98 back +$8.50 shipping - I'm taking the wheels off myself and then going to the dealer to have them put on. The reason that I'm changing the tires is that they are original to the bike (8K miles on it) and am worried about dry rot. So, new tires here we come!

I'm running the Avon Roadrunner front & Michelin Commander 2 on rear. (don't recall the sizes)

I'd always run the OEM Dunlops & wished that there were other choices. I don't have a ton of miles on them yet, but really like them so far. They are both supposed to run longer than the K555. The Michelin is claimed to run 2.5 times longer, according to Michelin. So, that would be 20K or more. I'll be thrilled with 15K.

I stick with the Dunlops. I find they grip well in all conditions. sometimes the trade off for that is tires that do not last quite as long. I'm Ok with that. Have the same issue with snow tires on my car. I buy the best I can get and they use a softer rubber compound, which means better traction but shorter life. Worthwhile trade off when you really need them to perform.
